Towards Hardness of Envy-Free Pricing
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider the envy-free pricing problem, in which we want to compute revenue maximizing prices for a set of products P assuming that each consumer from a set of consumer samples C will buy the product maximizing her personal utility, i.e., the difference between her respective budget and the product’s price. We show that assuming specific hardness of the balanced bipartite independent set problem in constant degree graphs or hardness of refuting random 3CNF formulas, the envy-free pricing problem cannot be approximated in polynomial time within O(log |C|) for some ε > 0. This is the first result giving evidence that envy-free pricing might be hard to approximate within essentially better ratios than the logarithmic ratio obtained so far. Additionally, it gives another example of how average case complexity is connected to the worst case approximation complexity of notorious optimization problems.

Uniform Budgets and the Envy-Free Pricing Problem
We consider the unit-demand min-buying pricing problem, in which we want to compute revenue maximizing prices for a set of products P assuming that each consumer from a set of consumer samples C will purchase her cheapest affordable product once prices are fixed. We focus on the special uniform-budget case, in which every consumer has only a single non-zero budget for some set of products. This...
متن کاملPricing Queries Approximately Optimally
Data as a commodity has always been purchased and sold. Recently, web services that are data marketplaces have emerged that match data buyers with data sellers. So far there are no guidelines how to price queries against a database. We consider the recently proposed query-based pricing framework of Koutris et al. [13] and ask the question of computing optimal input prices in this framework by f...
متن کاملRevenue Maximizing Envy-Free Pricing in Matching Markets with Budgets
We study envy-free pricing mechanisms in matching markets with m items and n budget constrained buyers. Each buyer is interested in a subset of the items on sale, and she appraises at some single-value every item in her preference-set. Moreover, each buyer has a budget that constraints the maximum affordable payment, while she aims to obtain as many items as possible of her preference-set. Our ...
متن کاملEnvy-Free Pricing in Multi-unit Markets
We study the envy-free pricing problem in linear multi-unit markets with budgets, where there is a seller who brings multiple units of a good, while several buyers bring monetary endowments. Our goal is to compute an envy-free (item) price and allocation, i.e. an outcome where all the demands of the buyers are met given their budget constraints, which additionally achieves a desirable objective...
متن کاملEnvy, Multi Envy, and Revenue Maximization
We study the envy free pricing problem faced by a seller who wishes to maximize revenue by setting prices for bundles of items. Consistent with standard usage [9] [10], we define an allocation/pricing to be envy free if no agent wishes to replace her allocation (and pricing) with those of another agent. If there is an unlimited supply of items and agents are single minded then we show that find...
